Prophetic Disciplines

The generic covenant was taken from the Messenger of God (may the prayers and peace of

God be upon him) against us that we would not become negligent by neglecting to learn the martial arts, such as archery, racing, self-defence and the like and thereafter that we would not abandon them after having been taught(the aforementioned), so that we would not lose our mastery in that regard. Few pay proper attention to this covenant.

Horseriding

“There is always goodness in horses till the Day of Resurrection.” [Bukhari]

Daily lessons will be taught in small groups, and students will learn about horses and horse care in addition to their riding classes. Sisters will have a female riding instructor.

“Verily Rukanah wrestled the Prophet, may the prayers and peace be upon him, took him down.”  [Abu Dawud]

Wrestling and, by extension, grappling instil discipline and the importance of adhering to principles which are paramount to an aspiring believer. By mastering these skills, one will naturally develop the potential to excel in religious obligations and duties that relate to God and His dependents.

It also imparts lessons on how to cope with adversity and positively address challenges faced in one’s life.

Classes will take place indoors on a large matted area. Classes are for absolute beginners and for intermediate/advanced students. A typical class is made up of a warm-up, specific technique drilling, technique demonstration, and sparring.

Swimming

“Any action without the remembrance of God is either a diversion or heedlessness excepting four acts: Walking from target to target [during archery practice], training a horse, playing with one’s family, and learning to swim.” [Tabarani]

Swimming is an activity that the Prophet, may the prayers and peace of God be upon him, encouraged his blessed companions to partake in, and it was also advocated as central to the rearing of children. The holistic teachings of our faith address the unique and distinct yet interconnected facets of the human being, namely the spiritual, rational and physical realities. Swimming being an all-round physical exercise, is among the reasons why it is recommended as modus operandi in the battle against cardiovascular illnesses and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Likewise It also has both told and untold effects with regard to the fortification of our intellectual and spiritual faculties.

Archery

“Practice archery and horseback riding.” [Muslim]

Archery was held in high regard by the Prophet, may the prayers and peace of God be upon him, such that it was given heavenly pertinence.

Archery teaches one how to fine-tune their ability to focus and hone the art of precision. It also facilitates learning to pull one’s vision towards an aim, negating external influences and learning how not to be distracted by them..
